Indonesia’s XL Axiata Primes Network for the Future of Mobile Data
In a fierce competition for leadership in Indonesia’s fast-growing mobile data market, XL Axiata needed a solid network design and a seamless transition to 4G LTE.
Indonesia’s second-largest mobile services operator, XL Axiata, invested heavily in a country-wide 4G LTE rollout, setting the stage for meteoric growth in its mobile data business. With nearly half the country’s population still not reached by XL’s 4G network, the expansion pace accelerated.

Business Challenge
XL Axiata needed a mobile backhaul architecture designed to handle data traffic that was more than doubling year-on-year, and to enable XL to compete for leadership in Indonesia’s burgeoning mobile data market. The network had to be cost effective, devoid of unnecessary complexity, and readily scalable.
The Technology Solution
Juniper Partner PT Lintas provided integration for XL’s mobile backhaul network, which used ACX Series access routers, including the ACX2200 for small cell sites and ACX5000 for aggregating backhaul traffic over Ethernet. MX Series routers were selected for their switching, routing, and security capabilities. A Juniper Professional Services team mapped out an expansion path for XL’s 4G LTE deployments.
Business Results
XL’s new network can scale to meet explosive mobile data traffic growth and demand for 4G LTE. The backhaul architecture eliminated unnecessary layers and network overlays, and has helped XL reduce CapEx and OpEx. XL will use the architecture as a design template for rolling out future backhaul deployments rapidly.
